When Google launched the Gemini app, much of the tech community was pretty disappointed. Aside from the fact that it didn’t land on tablets, it also didn’t hit iOS devices. iOS users could access Gemini by going to a dedicated tab in the Google app. However, according to a new report, Google finally brought the Gemini app over to iOS.
The Gemini app is much more useful now than when it first launched. At first, it didn’t do much more than answer questions. However, Google slowly trickled more functionality and assistant features down to the app. For example, Google finally added the Google Home extension to the Gemini app. This lets Gemini control your smartphone devices. If this sounds familiar, Google Assistant lets you do this. Since Gemini will eventually replace Assistant, we mark this as a major step forward for the AI platform.
The Gemini app finally makes it to iOS
Accessing Gemini on the iPhone wasn’t really convenient. It involved a two-step process; open the app, access the tab. The point of a dedicated app is cutting out steps and pushing people down the path of least resistance. As such, there wasn’t much reason to use Gemini over something like ChatGPT, which has its own app.
Well, iPhone toting Gemini users can finally install the Gemini app. It was a long time coming, as Google initially launched it in the Philippines. Now, users in the U.S., UK, Australia, Lebanon, and India can use the app. They just need an active App Store account, of course.
The Gemini app on iOS gives you many of the features you’d get on an Android phone. You’ll access all of your conversations from the site, use Gemini Advanced, and use Gemini Live. The neat thing about it is that when you exit the Gemini app while Gemini Live is on, you’ll see the activity in the Dynamic Island.
People using a modern iPad can also install the app. However, it’s just not properly optimized for iPad screens, so it’ll look a bit awkward. If you’ve been waiting for Gemini on your iPhone, don’t hesitate to download it now!
