Jefferson County Schools transportation director highlighting districts safety efforts following 3rd bus crash in last 6 days – WBRC

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Wednesday morning, another Jefferson County School bus was involved in a crash. While students were on board at the time, the crash was minor and thankfully there were no injuries.

However, this is the third accident involving a county school bus in less than a week.

Kevin Snowden says his heart drops every time there is an accident and that while the police reports on the accidents are not out, he believes the accidents on Friday and Monday were not the bus driver’s fault.

County leaders say they have 488 buses on the road each day and these buses run 555 different routes a day.

Snowden says county bus drivers have to get recertified each year and take defensive driving training classes.

He also says after every accident, a bus driver has to go for a post accident drug screening.

As for what is the leading cause of most accidents, Snowden says distracted driving is huge problem.

“Inattentiveness. Usually somebody is messing with something in the car. Whether it is their phone or food or whatever it is, they just aren’t paying attention and they run slap into the bus. And that ain’t good,” said Transportation Director for Jefferson County Schools Kevin Snowden.

The other big rule to remember, never go around a stopped school bus. For additional reminders on driving safety tips near buses you can click here.
