Governor Laura Kelly announced that the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) has secured nearly $32 million to integrate low-carbon construction materials into federally funded projects.
This funding, part of the Low Carbon Transportation Materials Program, aims to modernize construction practices by promoting materials with reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Emissions will be measured from cradle to gate, transitioning from national benchmarks to Kansas-specific benchmarks once sufficient local data is collected. Initial efforts will prioritize concrete, cement, and asphalt, with plans to assess the feasibility of incorporating low-carbon glass and steel in the future.
Kansas is among 39 states receiving funding through the Federal Highway Administration’s discretionary grant initiative.
