KEYLESS car theft is an ongoing problem in the UK, with many Brits forced to turn to traditional security measures to protect their vehicles.
Criminals using electronic devices such as keyless repeaters and signal amplifiers to break into keyless motors are prevalent in many areas across the country, with high-end, modern cars a particular target.

Speaking to Sun Motors, Mike Ellis at Lancaster Insurance revealed that his car was targeted not once, but twice, by thieves, and how this experience spurred him to use physical deterrents alongside clever tech.
He said: “My wife’s car was stolen from our drive by thieves who cloned the key through our front door – all of which was caught on camera.
“Now, we both use steering wheel locks, and I religiously put it on every time I leave the car.
“We were also advised to purchase a Faraday pouch to stop the signal being emitted from the key, protecting us from the device the thieves used.
“This was a good decision, as I had another incident recently with thieves trying to steal our car.
“They appeared to be using a scanning device on one of my cars, but as we have invested in signal-blocking pouches and a steering wheel lock, they were fortunately unable to drive away with our vehicles.”
Indeed, steering wheel locks are experiencing a resurgence in popularity, as motorists seek to combat rising car theft rates.
Perhaps their main benefit is that they act as a highly visible deterrent and can prevent thieves from targeting your vehicle in the first place.
A faraday pouch is a little less traditional, having been designed specifically for keyless car fobs.
They’re simple to use, with drivers urged to store their key inside it overnight – preventing thieves from picking up the fob’s signal from outside your home.
Wheel clamps are another great option that can prevent your car from being driven away.
Again, they are highly visible as they are often sold in bright colours, and may deter opportunistic thieves looking for a quick and easy target.
Traditional security measures are also considered when calculating insurance premiums.
Rich Morley at Lancaster Insurance explains that, no matter what car you drive, classic or modern, traditional-style security measures can provide extra peace of mind and security for your vehicle, helping to deter thieves in the process.
He added: “When considering a risk profile, we will establish with customers any security measures they have in place to prevent potential theft.
“In many cases, this will include adding traditional security measures such as a steering lock, wheel clamp or driveway bollards.
“We take these into consideration when reviewing the overall risk, and they can sometimes help to reduce premiums.”
