Apple just launched its brand new C1 modem yesterday with the iPhone 16e. But there’s another new Apple-designed chip coming soon, and per one report, it’s coming to the full iPhone 17 lineup.
New Apple-made Wi-Fi chip coming to full iPhone 17 line
Rumors have indicated for a while that Apple’s connectivity ambitions have contributed to a couple main internal projects.
There are the 5G modem projects, which include the new C1 and future C-class successors.
But Apple has also been working on its own in-house Wi-Fi solution, and per a new report it’s ready to debut in the full iPhone 17 lineup.
Ming-Chi Kuo writes in a post on X:
Following Qualcomm, Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chips will also be replaced by Apple’s in-house chips at a faster pace. My latest industry survey indicates that all new 2H25 iPhone 17 models will feature Apple’s in-house Wi-Fi chips (vs. only the slim iPhone 17 will adopt Apple’s C1 modem chip). Beyond cost reduction, the switch to in-house Wi-Fi chips will enhance connectivity across Apple devices.
Previously we had heard that the new Wi-Fi chip would arrive in at least some iPhone 17 models, but it was unclear which ones.
Now, it seems that Apple plans to replace Broadcom’s Wi-Fi chips in its entire fall iPhone lineup, including the iPhone 17, 17 Air, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max.
Kuo says this switch will “enhance connectivity across Apple devices,” which is fairly vague but intriguing nonetheless.
The C1 chip brought battery life improvements, so I’m curious to see if we see similar gains from Apple’s Wi-Fi chip, and what exactly the connectivity enhancements will be.
