Lawrenceburg Police warn of string of car thefts – WKYT

LAWRENCEBURG, Ky. (WKYT) – Lawrenceburg Police are investigating a string of thefts from cars over the weekend.

They say cars in three neighborhoods were hit, and some of the cars had firearms stolen from them.

“They were going for easy access valuables, weapons, money, computers, electronics,” said Savannah Caldwell with the Lawrenceburg Police Department.

Lawrenceburg Police say six people called into the station over the weekend to report thefts from cars. In four cases, firearms were one of the items stolen.

“It seems like when the weather is good, that’s when they’re able to go house-to-house, door-to-door and check these vehicles,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell says the cars were hit in the early morning hours, and they were all parked in a driveway.

“Anyone living in the Gatewood Drive, Woodford Street and Poplar Drive areas we ask to check their doorbells,” said Caldwell.

Caldwell says no damage was done to the cars because they were going for unlocked cars. Caldwell says they’re putting these signs out as part of their ‘lock it or lose it’ campaign.

“When we put them out in residential areas and areas where people live, they kind of get that extra reminder. like, ‘Oh, okay, as I’m going home, I need to make sure that I check that when I get stopped,’” said Caldwell.

Caldwell says when firearms are stolen, that’s an extra threat they and the community have to worry about.

“We don’t want to encounter these weapons if we come into contact with these individuals who are stealing this stuff. We know at this point they’re armed,” Caldwell said.

Caldwell says if the thieves are local, they could go back to the neighborhoods they’ve already hit.

“If they’ve had great success with four firearms on three streets, they may come back and try their luck again,” said Caldwell.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Lawrenceburg Police at 502-839-5125.
