Lenovo unveils the Legion Tab powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Lenovo has announced a bunch of new products for its Legion gaming line at CES this week, and this includes the Legion Tab, an Android tablet focused on providing top-tier mobile gaming. Mobile is the largest growing platform for gaming and shows no signs of slowing down, so it’s entirely reasonable that companies like Lenovo would want to enter this segment of the mobile market.

Once upon a time, it even tried its hand with gaming phones. However, that didn’t pan out as well as it has for other brands. Lenovo choosing to re-enter the mobile gaming market with a tablet seems like the logical thing to do. After all, it’s a relatively untouched area of mobile gaming. It does come as a little bit of a surprise, given Lenovo’s heavy focus on devices like the newly announced Legion Go S – a PC gaming handheld that can run either Windows 11 or Valve’s Steam OS platform.

Still, the Legion Tab will no doubt be a welcomed addition for consumers. Not everyone plays games on PC. Plus, there’s arguably a little more room for another player in the mobile gaming tablet space.

The newly announced Lenovo Legion Tab is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

If a mobile device is going to be branded as a “gaming” device, it needs to have some pretty powerful hardware. The Legion Tab definitely fits the bill here. It’s powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 which was the flagship mobile platform used in devices like the ROG Phone 8 series. Although it’s no longer Qualcomm’s latest mobile platform (the Snapdragon 8 Elite was announced early last year and powers devices like the ROG Phone 9), it’s still incredibly capable.

It supports Ray Tracing and refresh rates of up to 165Hz. In addition to this chipset, the Legion Tab also comes with an 8.8-inch 165Hz display. So it’ll be making full use of that refresh rate support. The display has QHD+ resolution as well. So games will definitely look crisp and beautiful. Interestingly, Lenovo has only packed in 256GB of storage. That’s not a small amount by any means. However, the most demanding mobile games these days are absolutely massive.

Games like Genshin Impact are upwards of 25GB or more. Honkai: Star Rail is even larger in file size at around 26.7GB. That’s only two games, and it’s already a fifth of the storage on the tablet. And that doesn’t even factor in the storage taken up for the Android OS and all its files. There’s no microSD card storage either. All of that being said, 256GB will probably be plenty for a lot of users. This configuration is also on par with what REDMAGIC offers on the Nova gaming tablet, which runs on very similar specs at a very similar price.

There should be enough battery power to game all day

Mobile gaming devices these days need to have a combination of a big battery and really fast charging. Mostly because graphically demanding games drain the battery life incredibly fast. The Legion Tab does come with a smaller battery at 6650mAh. It does also have an 8.8-inch display, so a larger battery capacity isn’t necessarily needed. And while the battery is smaller, it comes with a 45W charger so it should charge up relatively quickly.

In terms of audio, it has dual stereo speakers and support for Dolby Atmos. While we don’t necessarily expect the speaker to be mind-blowing, the Dolby Atmos will definitely amp things up. There’s also an 8MP front camera and a 13MP rear camera. This should be fine since it’s not likely to be used for photos much anyway. Lenovo is launching the Legion Tab this month and Lenovo says it’ll start at $499.99. Which suggests there will be a version with more storage and more RAM.
