LG has shown off a prototype for a new stretchable display. The company says the new display can be expanded by 50% of its original size.
An earlier prototype for a stretchable display that LG showed off in 2022 could instead be expanded by 20%, reports Android Authority
The new stretchable display then has an original size of 12-inches that can be stretched to 18-inches. The screen will also be able to withstand 10,000 stretches without affecting durability. The pixel depth of the screen, however, is a somewhat modest 100ppi which is much lower than modern phones, tablets and smartwatches.
The idea is that stretchable displays could be used in the future for convex displays for vehicles. Alternatively, a wearable version could be integrated with a firefighter’s uniform to display important real-time information.
What LG might use the technology for in the long run, however, remains to be seen but it’s certainly interesting.
