Christmas came early for OpenAI fans, as the San Francisco-based company is holding its 12 Days of “Shipmas” where it’s been announcing a bunch of exciting stuff. With 10 days down, OpenAI just announced something that no other major company has delivered. After giving ChatGPT a mouth and eyes, OpenAI just gave it a phone number.
Before jumping into that, you’d be happy to know that OpenAI just finally released Sora, its video-generation model. Soon after it launched, the company had to stop sign-ups because more people wanted to use the platform than the company anticipated.
ChatGPT Plus users can use the platform, but they can only generate up to 50 clips each month. Also, the clips can only be five seconds long at 720p resolution. The new $200/month ChatGPT Pro tier will give you unlimited generations, and the clips can be 1080p.
ChatGPT now has a phone number
How many people can say that they stayed up late at night chatting with a chatbot on the phone? Not many, but now is your chance to do so. During OpenAI’s latest announcement, the company introduced the new phone number that it set up for ChatGPT, 1-800-242-8478. You can actually call that number and speak to ChatGPT.
Just know that there’s a major limitation. You can only speak to ChatGPT for 15 minutes per phone number each month. So, you’ll need to keep your late-night tear-filled confessions short and sweet.
Why call ChatGPT?
Calling ChatGPT rather than interacting with a graphical user interface makes interacting with the chatbot easier. Sure, the tech-savvy among us find using the app easier than dialing a number, but we have to also think about the elderly.
Most elderly people today find it easier to make phone calls than to interact with app screens. It might be more intuitive just to call the number and speak to the voice.
Use WhatsApp to say “What’s up” to ChatGPT
This feature doesn’t only include your carrier-granted phone number. If you use WhatsApp, then you can also call the number. The experience that you get may vary slightly. The version of ChatGPT you can reach with your carrier number is powered by OpenAI’s Realtime API. The version you reach through WhatsApp is powered by GPT-4o mini. Either way, you’re getting access to powerful AI.
