A BUSY motorway has been SHUT due to a huge diesel spill spreading over half a mile, as drivers are warned of 90-minute delays.
Long delays are expected on the M5 in the West Country towards Bristol and Gloucestershire on Thursday, February 6.
Junction 24 for Bridgwater South and Junction 23 for Bridgwater North have been closed.
Motorists are being told to exit the M5 northbound at Junction 24, take the A38 through Bridgewater and then re-join the motorway via the A39.
One resident said the queues had created “mayhem” in the area.
They said: “M5 northbound is shut between junction 24 and 23 diesel spillage. As well as Dunball carriageway northbound is closed. Town is mayhem.”
National Highways said: “The M5 in Somerset is closed northbound between J24 and J23 near Bridgwater due to a large diesel spillage.
“The spillage from a heavy goods vehicle fuel tank, has spread for approximately half a mile down the carriageway.
“Emergency services including Avon and Somerset Police are on scene.
“National Highways Traffic Officers are also in attendance assisting with traffic management. Contractors will be attending to assist with clear-up works.”
