The busy carriageway has been closed southbound between the A439 and the A3400.

National Highways confirmed the spillage has damaged the road surface.

The road closure will likely remain in place all day while specialist contractors work on necessary resurfacing.

A National Highways spokesperson said: “Due to a large hydraulic fluid spillage, the #A46 is closed southbound between the #A439 (#Marraway) and the #A3400 (#Bishipton).

“The road is likely to remain closed throughout the day.”

Traffic is being diverted via local routes and drivers are being urged to allow for extra time on their journey.

Motorists have been warned to plan ahead, re-route or even delay their trip.
