Major A-road used by thousands each day which joins onto Britain’s busiest motorway will close in hours…check your route

A MAJOR A-road, which joins onto Britain’s busiest motorway, will close in a just few hours.

The A3, which is used by thousands every day and connects to the M25, will shut in both directions at 9pm today (April 11) in Surrey.

Drivers will be unable to use the stretch between the M25 Junction 10 and A3 Wisley interchange due to road works.

The closure will remain in place until 6am on Monday – sparking chaos for drivers in the Milford and Wisley area.

Junction 13 to Junction 14 at Heathrow will also be affected – spelling potential havoc for those catching flights over the weekend.

Drivers have been advised to take diversion routes provided by National Highways.

The works come as part of plans to reduce delays around Junction 10 – the most crowded section of the motorway.

A statement on Surrey County Council’s website reads: “Junction 10 is the busiest section of the M25, with over 270,000 vehicles travelling through it every day.

“Due to the volume of traffic and the resulting queues, this area of their network has a very poor safety record and holds one of the highest collision rates across the National Highways network.

“Their improvements will reduce delays, smooth traffic flow and create safer journeys for all.”

It is not the only closure set to hit the UK’s roads the coming days, as the M6 southbound lane will also close between junctions 39 and 40.

This will come into effect at 6am on Saturday and lift on Sunday.

It will reopen at a reduced capacity of two lanes and a 40mph speed limit from Monday 14.

And drivers should expect severe delays at the start of next week as the A3 Southbound from Hogs Back to Milford is closed for improvement works.

Motorists will be diverted via the parallel A6 during both closures.

The works are part of a £9 million overhaul of the bridge, which supports the thoroughfare over the River Lowther in Cumbria.

It will allow vital concrete repairs to the superstructure and substructure of the massive structure.

And on Monday, the M3 northbound from Junction 4a at the Minley Interchange to Junction 3 at Lightwater will be closed for “major improvement works”.

It comes after a number of road closures in the last week, which saw the M3 and M6 shut for maintenance works.

Project manager Edgar Vila Pouca thanked motorists at the time “for their patience” and said a signed diversion would be implemented through the M3 junction 5 Spur Road, A30 Ringway and A30 Winchester Road.

He added: “I would urge anyone planning on travelling to allow extra time to complete their journey.”
