You might not think about them that much, but right now, chipsets are more important in your daily life than they’ve ever been. We used to only think about them when it came to smartphones and computers, but these days, a lot of smart gadgets in your home need a special chip for the level of processing that they’re involved with.
MediaTek is one of the biggest chip makers in the world, so it is no surprise that they’re not only making chips for smartphones but for so many other devices in your home. They’re present at CES 2025 and have unveiled new chips to power important devices in your smart home, so let’s talk about them.
If you have a smart TV, you should understand that all the processing that it is able to do is akin to a smartphone. Sure, it might not have the power of a Dimensity 9400, but it can download apps, browse the internet, and process 4K video. That needs a significant processor to get done.
MediaTek has revealed one of its upcoming smart TV chipsets, the Pentonic 800, but that’s not what they really want you to hear about. Instead, it is the picture enhancement technology that the Pentonic 800 will be the first to launch with, called MiraVision Pro, that it wants you to know all about. Since the Pentonic 800 won’t just be a high-performance chip but will also have an NPU, you already know that there’s AI in there.
MiraVision Pro is going to bring a lot of major perks to the table, so let’s quickly go over a bunch of them:
- AI-Super Resolution 3.0 will upscale all resolutions to high-framerate 4K, and it will do that with low latency, which will help especially in gaming applications.
- AI-Contrast 2.0 will upgrade all content to HDR quality and will use AI to boost contrast to 500,000:1 levels.
- Graphic Mastering Beyond 4K UI: Using AI, will boost 4K UI and graphics to a quality surpassing true 4K.
- AI-Picture Quality: Uses AI scene and object recognition to improve the visual experience depending on what is happening on screen.
Google Home is one of the more popular options for smart home ecosystems. For a smart home to operate at its very best, all the various devices in that home need to be able to communicate with each other effectively. That’s why Google and MediaTek have come together to develop the new Filogic chipset for wireless connectivity. It comes with Bluetooth 6, tri-band Wi-Fi 6E, and Thread support.
The first of the bunch will be the MT7903 and it aims to make Thread integration into devices a lot smoother, while also supporting the Matter standard. So, if you’re the kind of person who has always wished that Thread was a lot more utilized than it currently is, this chipset might be the answer to those problems.
