Men Crashed Into Officer, Squad Cars After Attempted Burglary: Cops – Patch

NAPERVILLE, IL — Two men face multiple felony charges after police say they crashed into a police officer and hit a squad car after trying to break into a home in Naperville.

Rocky Miller, 45, and Vincent Ely, 21, of Chicago, were charged with attempted residential burglary in connection with the Oct. 4 incident.

According to prosecutors, Downers Grove police officers followed Miller and Ely, whom they say ran an “organized crime ring” to a home in the 1600 block of Apache Drive in Naperville. Police say Miller and Ely forced their way into the home’s back door, which caused a resident to scream, prompting the pair to flee in a Nissan Rogue.

Police say they tried to stop Miller and Ely in Chicago, but Miller sped off and hit a police officer from Lincolnwood and his car before continuing to flee. A police helicopter joined the chase, with Miller reaching speeds of more than 80 mph and hitting a Chicago police car and two other cars, a news release said.

According to police, Miller and Ely switched cars with another person and began fleeing in a minivan. After crashing the minivan, Miller and Ely kept fleeing on foot, police say, before they were taken into custody.

At the time of their arrest, Miller had been on parole for conspiracy to commit residential burglary.

“Thanks to the outstanding work of the Downers Grove Police Department, the two defendants have been arrested, charged and will be fully prosecuted,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin said in a statement.

He added, “The cooperation exhibited by the multiple agencies involved in this case is a testament to law enforcement not only in DuPage County, but all of our law enforcement partners. The outstanding teamwork by all those involved sends the message that in DuPage County, we will do whatever we can and use every resource available to us, including air support, to protect people’s homes and our communities.”

Miller is set to appear in court on Oct. 29 and Ely is scheduled to appear in court on Oct. 30.
