'mini' iPhone dream fades, Apple has no plans to make a new one

Summary: Apple has no plans to launch a new ‘mini’ iPhone. Mark Gurman pretty much just confirmed that, even though it was kind of obvious. The iPhone 13 mini remains the last ‘mini’ iPhone from the company. Apple is focusing on larger devices at this point, as is the case with pretty much every other smartphone OEM in the market.

This much may have been obvious at this point, but Apple has no plans to make a new ‘mini’ iPhone. Even though we knew that, Mark Gurman more or less confirmed it.

Apple has no plans to announce a new ‘mini’ iPhone, unsurprisingly

In a recent Q&A, which was streamed live, he confirmed that Apple has no such plans. Here’s an exact quote: “We’ll see what the market tells Apple. I mean, right now they’re not working on anything. They’re not working on a smaller iPhone right now, right? They’ve really shifted away. They’re trying to make that, you know, roughly six inch display. That is the base size, and they’re just trying to go bigger and bigger and bigger. And the bigger you go, the smaller the six-inch phones feel.”

This pretty much confirms that the smallest iPhone we’ll see has a display that is around 6 inches in size. It is true what Gurman says, the larger the ‘Max’ iPhone is, the smaller the regular one feels. So an iPhone with a 6.1-6.3-inch display won’t feel as big in comparison.

The last ‘mini’ iPhone arrived back in 2021

The ‘mini’ iPhone was in a category of its own, though. The last one was announced in September 2021, when the iPhone 13 mini arrived. That handset had a 5.4-inch display, and even though the sales weren’t particularly high, many people loved the device. That is also the last iPhone that I used as a daily driver.

The iPhone 13 mini was an ideal phone for one-hand use, and for people who wanted a very compact phone. Unfortunately, mainly due to low sales, Apple decided to cut the ‘mini’ lineup.

In the current iPhone 16 series, the iPhone 16e has the smallest display and is the smallest of all iPhones. The iPhone 16 is almost the same size, but the iPhone 16e is technically the smallest. Both of those devices are considerably larger than the iPhone 13 mini, though.

Even Android OEMs are focusing on larger devices. Quite a few of them did opt to announce 6.3-inch high-end smartphones in the last year or so, but not smaller than that.
