2024 hasn’t been to kind to Marques Brownlee, perhaps better known as MKBHD. There’s been quite a few controversies surrounding Brownlee lately, and now, there’s yet another one.
On Monday, November 11. Brownlee uploaded a new video to his channel titled “How My Video Gear Is Changing,” and it was a double-whammy. First off, it was a 10-minute video, and the whole purpose was to be an ad for DJI. It’s a little odd for Brownlee; typically, whenever he has sponsors, they get a small portion of the video, not an entire video, and those sponsors are typically very rare. Personally, I don’t have a problem with it, even though it is rather annoying.
It’s pretty telling since Brownlee did not even announce he was uploading a video on X, which he has done for every other video.
Driving 96 mph in a 35 is a bad look
But the big controversy came from some recording he did in the car. In the Lamborghini that Brownlee was driving, it shows his speed on the passenger side as well, which he didn’t blur out. And it shows that he was going 96 miles per hour, just after passing a Speed Limit sign for 35mph. Not only that but there was also a sign indicating that children were in the area, which was also shown in the video. That’s a terrible look for him and his channel, and the cops could get involved – but likely won’t.
The thing is, he knew this was wrong. Because Brownlee did blur out the speedometer in front of the steering wheel. But forgot to do it on the passenger side.
It seems that Brownlee has seen the controversy and has edited the video to remove that portion, which was very short anyway. And with YouTube’s editor, you can cut out portions of a video without needing to re-upload it, which is what seems to have happened here. In fact, when the video was first uploaded, it was 9:14 long; it’s now 9:08 long, meaning he cut out 6 seconds.
MKBHD seems to be having a bad year, which is unfortunate. But given how many people see each video before it goes live, it’s crazy that this little tidbit was missed.
