The car showrooms in London’s upmarket Mayfair tend to sell £200,000 Range Rovers and £1 million Rolls-Royces. But walk into the BYD outlet in the area, just off Berkeley Square, and you can buy its Dolphin electric car for £26,000. Stella Li, the executive vice-president and global face of the world’s fastest-growing car firm, is convinced that it and BYD’s other new models will fly out of the door.
“We have premium design, technology and innovation,” she explains as she tries to sell me a Dolphin. Isn’t she forgetting something? “We are the best value in the industry,” she adds. Li isn’t kidding: that £26,000 gets you a 265-mile range, vegan leather, heated seats, and voice control of key functions.
