NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The next time you get your brake pads changed or a new bumper, the bill might be more expensive than you remember after a 25% tariff is affecting almost everything crossing the Mexican or Canadian border. This includes car parts, which Nashville mechanics say are about to get more expensive.
“Once the tariffs are in effect, they’re going to have to readjust their pricing just to make it worthwhile. Generally, a $500 brake job may be a $600 brake job coming up soon,” Chris Fowle with Precision Tune Auto Care said.
The reason for that, he says, is at least a quarter of the cars they service are from overseas and it’s unlikely that’s going to change.
“In the car industry, it’s not easy to retool your production lines for the assembly process, so there’s really not a whole lot of things they can do to cut corners or to cut costs to offset the cost of the tariffs at this point,” Fowle said.
So, he says those costs will be passed on to you.
The best thing to do now – he says- is get maintenance on your car so parts won’t have to be replaced.
“Frequent oil changes, frequent tire rotations, check your brakes once a year, do your alignments when you need to, so that way the small things that may happen while you’re driving don’t turn into big things and become expensive, and even more expensive with the tariffs in place,” Fowle said.
