This is the new Ford Puma Gen-E, an all-electric version of the small SUV that topped UK sales charts last year. It has largely the same design as the regular model, but it’s an electric car and has a range that beats what many alternatives can offer.
New Ford Puma Gen-E design
Because it’s based on the petrol model, there aren’t many obvious design changes to the Ford Puma in its conversion to an EV. However, the funky front end now gets a blanked off grille to help you spot the difference.
It’s all the same down the side, but you do get the choice of some Gen-E-specific alloy wheel designs, which have aerodynamic efficiency in mind to help improve range.
Around the back you also get a new rear spoiler, which gives the car a subtly sporty look, though its main purpose is to smooth airflow over the car, again in the name of maximising range.
New Ford Puma Gen-E interior and infotainment
Inside, it gets all the same improvements that can be found on the recently updated petrol Puma, which include a complete redesign of the dashboard and better technology.
The central infotainment screen is a 12.0-inch touchscreen unit that runs Ford’s latest software and comes with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. Ahead of the driver is a digital instrument display that shows all the relevant driving information, such as speed and range.
Practicality is impressive. The regular Puma has a ‘MegaBox’ beneath the main boot floor that offers extra storage, but the conversion to electric power has allowed Ford to increase the size of this. It’s now called a ‘GigaBox’, and contributes to a 574-litre boot capacity, which is equivalent to much bigger cars. You get a 43-litre front boot, too.
New Ford Gen-E electric motors and batteries
You get a 43kWh battery in the Ford Puma Gen-E, which provides a range of up to 233 miles between charges. This appears to be an efficient setup, because the Peugeot E-2008 only gets 212 miles from a bigger battery.
High speed charging isn’t amazing at 100kW, but because the battery isn’t particularly big, you can get from 10-80% in just 23 minutes.
The motor powers the front wheels and makes 168hp, meaning the Puma Gen-E can sprint from 0-62mph 8.0 seconds and on to a top speed of 99mph.
New Ford Puma Gen-E price and specs
The new Ford Puma Gen-E is available to order now, with deliveries expected to begin in March.
Prices start at £29,995 in Select trim and rise to £31,995 in Premium specification. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, fabric upholstery and a rear-view camera. You also get cruise control to take the strain out of motorway driving.
Step up to Premium and you get larger 18-inch alloy wheels, which contribute to the range dropping a bit to 226 miles. Other equipment includes Matrix LED headlights, keyless entry and a powered boot lid.
