New Iron Range transportation building gets approval – Northern News Now

DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – A new public works transportation building is going to be built on the Range to serve the region.

The St. Louis County Board voted to authorize a bond sale of $45 million to build the new transportation building in Balkan Township.

It will serve Hibbing, Chisholm and surrounding communities.

Currently the public works operates out of a facility in Hibbing, sharing the space with the city and MnDOT.

However, the county’s space is in the oldest part of the building and is no longer efficient.

The county is using revenue from the transportation sales tax to pay for the project, so there is no impact on property taxes.

Construction is expected to start this fall and be complete by the summer of 2027.
