NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) – New Orleans residents complained about abandoned and junk vehicles in every corner of the city in 2024.
The city’s public 3-1-1 dashboard shows more than 7,000 requests to the city for action on the vehicles, with nearly 4,700 remaining over the course of 2024.
Fox 8 found abandoned several abandoned cars, an RV and even an abandoned boat underneath the a Claiborne Avenue overpass Wednesday (12/18).
Gabriel Flores works nearby and said the boat is a first.
“You see all kinds of different vehicles. Sometimes they’re smashed, sometimes they’re just abandoned, tires flat, whatever it may be,” he said.
The boat, which appeared to have been turned into a kind of dumpster, featured a yellow tag. The tag indicated the city would scrap the vehicle if it wasn’t removed.
Fox 8 found a similar yellow tag on a truck parked on Baronne Street.
Nolavore Catering owner Anne Lloyd said it’s been parked there since September.
“That does happen to be my sous-chef’s favorite parking spot so it’s been a bit of an annoyance for him,” she said.
When Fox 8 circled around to the Claiborne overpass on Friday (12/20), the boat had been removed.
Flores had told Fox 8 the city had been quick about removing vehicles.
“At least there’s a list and they get to it eventually,” he said.
Fox 8 also found a vehicle on Telemachus Street which a 3-1-1 complaint had been created on Dec. 18. A yellow tag on the vehicle indicated the Department of Public Works arrived the same day.
Fox 8 has asked the city administration for an interview on its efforts to remove junk cars.
