Electric vehicles, despite being the future of all our roads, still raise many doubts, especially the issue of batteries, because many believe that vehicle batteries last the same (or less) than an iPhone battery, but is that true? Now, a study by SLAC-Stanford Battery Centre has disproved this concern about Electric Vehicles (EV), so, once the doubts on this subject have been dispelled, the transition to sustainable mobility is on its way. We tell you everything that has been discovered with this study.
This study changes everything
Many people have always doubted whether or not to buy an electric car for fear that the battery will not last long enough and its useful life will wear out soon, but now they have discovered that they could last up to a third longer than estimated (as long as the car is properly cared for).
How does it differ from traditional methods?
When testing batteries (so far), the tests are carried out under controlled conditions where the battery is charged and discharged constantly and evenly, but it does not clearly reflect the use of our vehicles in our daily lives.
But, this new study aims to show how batteries work in real situations. How? Very simple, in three simple steps:
- Braking and accelerating in traffic jams, where you do not move at constant speeds.
- When you leave the car parked for several days.
- When you drive variable distances (because you do not always go in the same direction)
Does this change anything for users?
For those who never want to drive an EV, obviously not, but for those undecided who didn’t know what to do or whether to buy an electric vehicle, but the idea of changing the battery every so often due to wear didn’t quite fit into their plans, it is certainly great news. It’s not easy to make the step towards EVs, but a battery that lasts longer means less complications (and above all, fewer repairs that cost money). In addition, with battery prices falling in recent years, electric vehicles are becoming an increasingly accessible option for everyone, and don’t forget that they are the future!
Is it just an economic impact?
No! Think that, as they last longer, fewer will be manufactured and the environmental impact associated with the production of these batteries will be reduced, so we would all win and so would our planet.
But not only for users, manufacturers will also be able to influence the way companies test their batteries to provide more realistic data on their sales.
According to Simona Onori, one of the authors of the study, “we have not been testing batteries in the right way.” By adjusting the tests to reflect how cars are used in real life, they found that batteries suffer less wear and tear than previously thought.
So, this study is just the first step in researching the sustainability of this type of battery, which could not only be used for cars, but also for, for example, solar panels or wind energy to make everything last longer (and not be so close to obsolescence). In a world where sustainability is becoming more important, this discovery makes the step towards a cleaner world possible.
You know, if you were hesitating about whether to buy an electric vehicle or not, this is your moment!!
