The latest Apple accessory has just been unveiled. It’s a cable. No, wait, come back, it’s actually really interesting. The Nomad Universal Cable for Apple Watch is a unique and appealing pitch. Here’s what’s just been announced.
If you don’t know Nomad, maybe you should. It makes leather cases for the iPhone (something Apple doesn’t do any more), neat AirTag holders and lots of charging products. These include an effective travel accessory: a twin-device charging plug with an Apple Watch puck built into the top.
Now, it’s come up with the Nomad Universal Cable for Apple Watch and it’s another unique item.
It’s a 1.5-meter (about 5 feet) USB-C to USB-C cable with a Kevlar outer weave, so you can trust that it will be strong and durable. It promises 100W capability. That’s a lot more than many cables can deliver and it can fast-charge an iPhone, iPad and even a MacBook. But there’s more.
Next to one end of the cable is an Apple Watch charging puck, a fast-charging one at that. This means that you can plug one end into the wall, and the other end into an iPhone, for instance, and right next to one end, you can charge an Apple Watch—any model, though only the most recent ones will charge faster, specifically Sereis 7 and later plus Apple Watch Ultra and Ultra 2—at the same time.
You can charge the Watch from an iPhone, for instance, but if you plug the other end into the mains, then both iPhone and Watch will charge from that. You can In other words, it promises real versatility.
The cable has an integrated cable tie so it’s convenient to carry when you’re traveling.
It clearly has a lot going on for it. So, what’s the catch? Well, it’s not cheap: it sells for $100 (£.85 in the U.K.). And you need to supply your own charging plug if you’re not charging the Watch from an iPhone, say. And that charger, which needs to be capable of 20W or more for multiple device charging, is not supplied.
To be fair, Nomad’s products are routinely high-quality and while they’re not cheap, they often offer strong value. The new cable is now available from nomadgoods.com.
