Not Too Different: Here’s Our First Look At The OnePlus Open 2

For a first attempt at a foldable, the OnePlus Open was pretty darn good. And that’s considering that OnePlus is a fledgling company compared to giants like Samsung or Huawei. However, despite how well the foldable was received, it has been well over a year since it launched, without a sequel following it.

The good news is that we know the OnePlus Open 2 exists and that it is going to come sometime next year. The bad news is that we don’t know when. But, some extra good news is that we know what it is going to look like, and for now, that’ll be enough to assuage us.

The OnePlus Open 2 Will Sport A Very Similar Design, And That’s Not A Bad Thing

The OnePlus Open is not a bad-looking foldable. It’s not the most beautiful one that I’ve ever seen but it looks nice enough for me. Thanks to the people over at Smartprix, we know what the OnePlus Open 2 is going to look like, and the answer is, “very similar”. That’s not a bad thing though. It’s only the company’s second attempt, so you can hardly accuse the design of being stale.

There are only two images available at the moment. The more boring one shows the device completely unfolded. We see a roughly square screen, a selfie camera in the upper-right corner, and bezels that don’t seem to drastically differ from last year. We can also spot the power button and volume rocker on the right side, and what is almost certainly the alert slider on the left.

However, things get a tad more exciting when you fold the device and flip it over. To the untrained eye, it is very similar to the original OnePlus Open. It’s got a OnePlus logo smack-dab in the center of the back panel, a circular camera module above that, and a flash in the upper left. However, the alignment of the lenses changes, with one each at the top, left, and right, and the Hasselblad logo now occupying the space at the bottom.

What Do We Know About The OnePlus Open 2 In Actual Specifications?

On the actual spec sheet, nothing is certain about the upcoming foldable from OnePlus, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing to say. For one, we can see that the triple-camera system sticks around and the periscope telephoto lens will still be around (judging from that rectangular aperture). We should expect a sub-10mm thickness when folded and a major boost to an IPX8 water resistance rating.

Rumors point to an 8-inch diagonal—slightly larger than its predecessor—on a 120Hz LTPO display. The cover screen will measure 6.4 inches, again, slightly larger than the phone that came before it. Unsurprisingly, the Snapdragon 8 Elite will be the chip of choice, with a 16GB/1TB top configuration.

Expect a triple 50MP camera setup on the rear, with a 32MP selfie camera on the cover and a 20MP selfie camera embedded in the foldable display. And with the way that battery capacities have been rising, claims of a 5,900mAh battery don’t sound too ridiculous.
