nubia V70 Max First Impressions, Hands-On Review – YugaTech | Philippines Tech News & Reviews

The nubia V70 Max was launched in the Philippines a little over a month ago. We were able to snag a unit for ourselves, so we’re putting it up today for a hands-on review.

This device is an entry-level offering with an attractive price point of just under PHP 5,000. Considering how much it’s worth, we’re here to cover whether or not it’s a good find.

Design

Our review unit came in Gray, which has what feels like a polycarbonate frame and an etched glass back panel. It’s certainly sizable and has a good amount of weight to it.

This phone is rated for drop resistance, which might surprise some. It also has an IP54 rating for dust and splash resistance. This was surprising because at first glance it comes off as thin and flimsy.

The design language it provides is reminiscent of the recently launched HONOR X9c Smart 5G. It also feels like the camera enclosure draws inspiration from realme devices.

Users will notice just three functional sensors on the camera bump and a LED flash situated outside on the left.

At the front, we have the phone’s display panel with a camera situated in a water drop notch. Readers should also notice that the screen comes with thick bezels.

For buttons and ports, we have the volume rocker and power button which also works as a fingerprint sensor on the right side. There’s also a dual SIM tray on the left.

At the bottom, we have a single speaker grille, USB Type-C port, a microphone, and a 3.5mm audio port.

Overall, it’s a fairly simple muted design that doesn’t come off as a low-end entry-level offering. However, the screen balances it out as the notch and bezels make it feel more dated.

Display & Audio

The nubia V70 Max has a 6.9-inch IPS LCD panel with a refresh rate of 120Hz that supports HD+ resolution. Audio output options include its aforementioned 3.5mm audio port and mono loudspeaker.

The display felt good to use for video streaming at home. My gripe is that using it under direct sunlight doesn’t provide the best experience. I should also note that maxing the brightness out doesn’t remedy this.

Generally though, the colors are accurate and came out alright in our first day of using it.

Meanwhile, the speaker was surprisingly good. It provided decent mids and highs, even with max volume. Under this segment, we usually expect that putting it on blast comes with a quality trade-off.

Cameras

For optics, it’s equipped with a 50-megapixel main camera, a 2-megapixel depth sensor, and an AI camera at the rear. At the front, we also have an 8-megapixel selfie snapper.

Shots taken with the device were decent. It leverages post-processing, which evidently helps how the photos turn out. After taking a photo, users have to wait around three seconds for it to load.

Of course, detail retention isn’t the best seeing as it’s under the entry-level segment. This is evident should a user zoom into their photos.

Selfies taken with the device come with a similar experience. Light and solid colors are favored over texture and detail.

All things considered, the V70 Max does alright under this segment. Our expectations certainly weren’t high, but users should be able to enjoy taking quick snaps with the phone.

OS, Apps, & UI

The phone ships with MyOS 15 based on Android 15 out of the box. Putting it simply, it feels like a polished stock Android skin.

It also comes with Google’s suite of apps and a handful of bloatware.

Usable pre-installed apps include TikTok, WPS Office, and Block Blast. There’s also a folder for Hot Apps and Games, which doesn’t really recommend the best options.

As for its user interface, standard gesture features include the app drawer, notifications, and quick toggles from the drop down menu.

Performance & Benchmarks

Under the hood, it’s powered by a UNISOC T606 chipset with eight cores and a Mali-G57 GPU. For reference, our review unit also came with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage.

If users find these lacking, it has up to 6GB of additional memory that can be tweaked under settings. Plus, it supports microSD cards via a dedicated slot on the SIM tray.

So far, we’ve been able to use the phone for browsing, streaming, and gaming. Despite not having the highest storage configuration, it can handle Genshin Impact without heating up.

Of course, this is provided that it’s played with the lowest graphic settings enabled. While there wasn’t any issues like frame drops yet, it certainly isn’t smooth.

This suggests that users can only work towards finishing dailies with the device. However, playing less resource-heavy titles should come with better results.

This includes games like Mobile Legends and Teamfight Tactics, which aren’t too demanding memory and frame-wise.

Overall, it’s alright if users can look past the bit of clunkiness. To be fair though, this is a lot already considering how much it’s worth.
