The drama around the sale of TikTok in the U.S. is taking new turns every other day. Although President Trump initially immunized the short-video platform from going dark in the US, it’s still at risk of being banned in the country. As the April 19 deadline looms, a new survey report reveals that fewer people are now supporting the TikTok ban in America.
The population supporting the TikTok ban in America has dropped by a big margin
The survey report published by the Pew Research Center suggests that support for the TikTok ban has plunged over the last two years. Back in 2023, when the same organization surveyed 5,000 American adults, about 50% of them supported the banning of TikTok.
However, the numbers aren’t the same anymore. According to the latest survey report, out of 5,000 American adults, only 34% reportedly supported the TikTok ban. The number of people opposing the TikTok ban has increased from 22% to 32%.
Republican and Republican-leaning voters’ support for the TikTok ban in America has dropped from 60% to 39% in the last two years. That’s not all; Democratic voters appear to have also stopped supporting the TikTok ban in America. The number of Democrats and Democrats-leaning voters supporting the ban has dropped from 43% to 30% since March 2023.
Interestingly, non-TikTok users were reportedly four times as likely to support the ban as those who use the app. It’s been reported that 45% of non-TikTok users supported its ban. Meanwhile, only 12% of those who use the app are in favor of banning it in America.
Perplexity AI has reportedly joined the race to buy TikTok
Although supporters of the TikTok ban in America may have dropped sharply, its fate in the country is uncertain for now. U.S. President Donald Trump is doing his bit to keep the platform alive. However, the ban extension might not be as effective. Anyway, there are already many contenders willing to buy TikTok. Reports from the past week hint that the AI company, Perplexity, is also trying to buy TikTok. It’ll be interesting to see how things unfold for TikTok in the coming days.
