NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 5080 GPU rumored to see huge price increase

The price of the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 GPU has been rumored and unfortunately, it isn’t going to be cheap if the pricing details are accurate. Of course, NVIDIA’s top-end GPUs are never cheap, and they’ve been quite expensive for years. That being said, this new rumored price is a whole other ball game when it comes to cost.

In comparison to the RTX 4080, the RTX 5080, based on NVIDIA’s Blackwell architecture, could be considerably more money. This is according to a leaked list of graphics cards and their associated price tags from an Australian retailer. The retailer isn’t named for obvious reasons, but the person who obtained the information is a YouTube content creator named Vex (via Wccftech), who shows off a screenshot of that pricing list.

If the prices are accurate, then the RTX 5080 is going to cost $2,799 AUD. That works out to around $1,500 USD, which is, high. For comparison, the RTX 4080 launched at a price of $1,199.99, so that makes this a $300 price increase. That’s an absolutely bonkers price for a graphics card, and if you live in Australia, start penny-pinching now. Because you’re potentially going to need every cent if you plan to try and buy one of these when they first launch.

The high price of the RTX 5080 could be due to improved AI or Ray Tracing

It’s worth mentioning that these prices can’t be confirmed. However, Vex believes the leaker is credible. Because the picture of the retail list looks like it was taken in a retail setting. Specifically with the picture being taken of the price list of these graphics cards on what is assumed to be one of the retail store’s employee PCs.

It looks as if the graphics cards listed are all the ASUS Prime GeForce RTX 5080 GPU. So with that in mind, even if these prices are accurate, they could be slightly different for different models of the RTX 5080. After speaking with the leaker, Vex lays out a theory on the price increase. He says that he was told that the retail store’s employees believe the price increase is due to NVIDIA adding some improvements with the AI and Ray Tracing. This is a theory that Vex shares.

NVIDIA hasn’t officially shared any information about the cards. However, it is believed that NVIDIA will announce the new GPU series at CES in January.

NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5080 Price Leak

This particular GPU will come with 16GB of GDDR7 VRAM

Other than the name and the price, the leak mentions that the ASUS Prime card will come with 16GB of GDDR7 VRAM. There aren’t any images of the actual card, but previous ASUS Prime GPUs have a triple fan design. So it’s possible this new card will have the same thing.

The retail store appears to have or will have several models of this graphics card in stock. Unfortunately, there’s no other information about the cards. That being said, if NVIDIA does announce the 50-series at CES, it won’t be a very long wait to learn more. Most companies will likely announce their own cards at the same time. Another thing to keep in mind is a possible shortage. Back in November, NVIDIA said that it suspected a GPU shortage may be on the horizon.

This could cause prices to rise if it happens. So it’s possible these prices are a result of that.
