Sam Altman-led popular AI company OpenAI mainstreamed artificial intelligence with the launch of ChatGPT back in late 2022. We are in 2025, and now it seems the ChatGPT-maker is looking to expand its product line. OpenAI has filed a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for humanoid robots, smart jewelry, AR/VR headsets, and more.
OpenAI’s latest trademark filing hints at future products like humanoid robots and more
Speaking of humanoid robots, the trademark application mentions that those would be “user-programmable” and “with communication and learning functions.” Interestingly, OpenAI’s future humanoid robots would assist and entertain people. The AI company has reportedly kicked off hiring for a new robotics team under Caitlin Kalinowski, who came on board from Meta’s AR glasses department late last year.
Besides humanoid robots, OpenAI also mentions its intention to develop custom AI chips and services in the trademark filing. The company plans to “leverage quantum computing resources to improve AI model performance.” It isn’t the first time we have heard about OpenAI developing in-house custom chips. A few past reports similarly noted the AI company’s plans.
OpenAI might plan to release its own custom chip by partnering with Broadcom and TSMC as early as next year. Meanwhile, OpenAI’s quantum computing plans aren’t quite as clear as the plans for humanoid robots. Besides a few reports about hiring a former quantum systems architect from PsiQuantum, there isn’t much news in this regard.
Altman says that most of the products are several years away
The trademark application further notes that the company’s future products are for “interaction, simulation, and training.” Last year, Altman suggested that OpenAI was working with an Apple designer named Jony Ive on a hardware project, different from humanoid robots.
OpenAI head told The Elec that the company also aims to design AI-powered gadgets with the help of other companies. All that said, he also mentioned that these products are several years away.
