Plex announces price hike for its premium subscription

If you are into streaming services and run your own home server to keep a collection of browsable media in one place, Plex should be no stranger to you. However, the news here might upset many Plex lovers. The company has announced a price hike for its premium subscription, Plex Pass, for the first in a decade.

Plex has announced a price hike for its premium subscription

Plex, in its announcement, notes that the monthly subscription for the Plex Pass will soon cost $7 per month, a price hike of $2 per month. On the other hand, the yearly subscription will soon cost $70, up from the current price of $40.

Plex has almost doubled the price of its lifetime pass, increasing it from $120 to $250. Don’t worry, Plex isn’t charging the revised prices for its premium subscription right away. The revised pricing will take effect on April 29.

While the price hike is substantial, you still have a month to grab the lifetime Plex Pass at the original $120 price. It’s worth noting that the hiked prices for monthly and yearly Plex Pass subscriptions will impact both new and existing Plex customers. Plex also says that the remote streaming feature will now cost $2 per month or $20 per year.

Plex is not only hiking the price, but it is also introducing new tools for users. It is integrating with Common Sense Media to provide ratings and reviews aimed at parents to Plex Pass holders. The company says that it will soon launch a server management app compatible with both browsers and mobile devices. Not to forget, the remote playback for personal media is also getting some sort of refresh.

The company is also removing mobile unlock fees

Although the Plex Pass’s price hike might sound bad, there’s some good news too. Plex is scrapping the mobile unlock fees. Previously, when you wanted to stream media to Android or iOS devices, you were required to either pay a one-time activation fee or subscribe to Plex Pass. Failing to do so would cap your playback after a minute. The company says that will be a thing of the past when the new Plex app goes live.
