For $1250, businesses in Plymouth can sponsor a squad car for five years.
The idea coming from police chief John Weir as a way to give back to the community and give the department extra money.
The money is considered a donation and will pay for the car to be wrapped and has incentives for the sponsor.
“You can put a up to an eight inch decal on the back glass, and then up to a four inch decal on the front fenders, just to show that you’re the one that sponsored this vehicle. So just kind of way to help small business, people around the community,” Chief Weir said.
Two cars have already been sponsored and wrapped. One for the Plymouth Community School Corporation and the second for the Plymouth Fraternal Order of Police.
The F.O.P’s president saying that they wanted to support the department but also get their name out there.
“This project, it was one way for us to get our logo out there more where people can see it. And this is a great program to benefit local businesses,” Hurshel Hunter said.
Chief Weir adding sponsors don’t have to worry if the cruiser with their decals is taken out of service early.
“They put one on a squad this week, and then say, next year it hits the a deer, is involved in an accident, gets totaled, Well, we will put their decal on the next squad or the …, because that kind of … they got short changed. In a sense, I don’t want to short change anybody,” Chief Weir said.
Businesses in Plymouth can sponsor a squad car as long as it is not offensive to the public or department.
Chief weir hopes to use the extra funds, potentially over 8,000 dollars to purchase e-bikes and other equipment.
