Qualcomm today, announced three new Snapdragon Gaming processors – Snapdragon G3 Gen 3, Snapdraogn G2 Gen 2 and Snapdragon G1 Gen 2. These are set to power the next generation of Android gaming handhelds. And they can also be paired with the Snapdragon X61 5G modem, which is several years old at this point.
The Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 is the base-level gaming processor from Qualcomm, with the G2 sitting in the middle, and G3 being the high-end option. Of course, the G3 Gen 3 is the star here and it gets a pretty major upgrade over the G3x Gen 2 from 2023. It features eight Kryo cores, using one prime core, five performance cores, and two efficiency cores. Qualcomm is not going into specifics on these cores, however. It also has an Adreno A32 GPU which is said to be a 28% performance increase.
This processor can now support up to 144Hz refresh rate and QHD+ resolution displays. It also has hardware-accelerated ray tracing, Adreno Frame Motion Engine 3.0, and Snapdragon Game Super Resolution, support included.
Inside, the Snapdragon G3 Gen 3 also has the FastConnect 7800 module that gives it WiFi7 and Bluetooth 5.3 connectivity. This processor is already inside upcoming devices like the AYANEO Pocket S2, AYANEO Gaming Pad, and the ONEXPLAYER ONEXSUGAR 1.
Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 and G2 Gen 2 are modest upgrades
Moving onto the lower-end models, the Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 also features eight Kryo cores, using two performance and six efficiency cores. So it’s nowhere near as powerful as the G3 Gen 3. It also has an Adreno A12 GPU, which is said to be about 25% better in graphics performance. There is WiFi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1 support with an option to add the Snapdragon X61 5G modem which first debuted in 2023.
The Snapdragon G1 Gen 2 is expected to be present in devices like the Retroid Pocket PR Classic.
Then there’s the G2 Gen 2. This is slightly higher-end than the G1 Gen 2, still featuring eight Kryo cores. However, this one has a prime core, four performance cores, and three efficiency cores. Qualcomm says that performance is about 2.3x better than its predecessor. It’s GPU is the Adreno A22 which is said to be about 3.8x better than the A21. It also supports up to 144Hz refresh rate and QHD+ resolution displays, with the FastConnect 7800 module onboard and an option for the X61 5G Modem.
The Retroid Pocket has already been announced as running on the Snapdragon G2 Gen 2.
