Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB of RAM could be coming soon

There are many gadgets and computers out there for a variety of needs. But it isn’t always a one-size-fits-all solution. Sometimes there are certain features that are missing. This is why devices like the Raspberry Pi exist. It’s a great way for DIYers to create something that does what they want. Now it looks like the Raspberry Pi Foundation is getting ready to launch the Raspberry Pi 5 with 16GB of RAM.

16GB variant in the works

According to a report from NotebookCheck, they have heard from their sources that a 16GB RAM variant of the Raspberry Pi 5 is coming very soon. Last year, the Raspberry Pi Foundation had previously hinted that a corresponding version of the CM5 is on the way. However, it did not share additional details other than to say it would be launching this year.

At the moment, the Raspberry Pi 5 ships with up to 8GB of RAM. There are additional memory options for 2GB and 4GB as well. This depends on your needs and what you plan to do with it. For simpler creations, like making a control for a smart home, you could get away with less RAM. For more resource-hungry creations, 8GB might be required.

Offering a variant that goes up to 16GB could unlock more possibilities with the device. Especially for tasks that might require additional memory. There are definitely some tinkerers out there who have been hoping to see a version with more RAM, so this could be good news for them.

Coming very soon

According to the report from NotebookCheck, it seems that the 16GB variant of the Raspberry Pi 5 could be a lot closer than expected. The report claims that the company could announce the device on the 8th of January. This is right in the middle of CES 2025.

The report claims that there are some Raspberry Pi 5 units that are shipping with markings for 16GB of RAM. Note that these units do not actually have 16GB of RAM installed. Rather, the markings are an indication that a 16GB model is a potential future variant.

Also, given the company’s past releases, there’s a good chance that the device can be bought on the same day it is announced.

So for all you tinkerers out there that have been clamoring for a Raspberry Pi with more RAM, this could be a model you’ll want to keep an eye out for.
