Realme challenges smartphone photography limits with interchangeable lens concept

realme came to Barcelona this year to make a big splash at Mobile World Congress with One More Thing, as Apple tends to do. But it’s One More Ultra Thing in the case of realme.

The company is introducing a “groundbreaking interchangeable-lens Concept” that uses two pro-level lenses. This includes a 73mm portrait lens and a 234mm 10x telephoto lens. According to realme, this delivers optical clarity that was “previously unthinkable for mobile devices”, including offering some creamy bokeh instead of the AI-generated bokeh that is quite easy to see. And it has a lossless 10x zoom.

The realme Ultra is not yet mass-produced, hence the “concept” tag on this product, but the company says that it embodies its commitment to pushing boundaries. It will continue to explore solutions to industry-wide challenges, including sensor-size limitations and digital zoom compromises in smartphones, using modular optics.

realme is also launching the 14 Pro series globally

realme first announced the 14 Pro series in Copenhagen last December, which I was in-person at that event to see first-hand. Now, the series is launching in Europe. This consists of the realme 14 Pro and realme 14 Pro Plus, which will cost €429 and €529, respectively.

The realme 14 Pro series is the world’s first smartphone that is cold-sensitive and can change colors based on the temperature. I got a chance to play with this in Copenhagen, and it does turn blue when it is outside in cold weather. Which is really unique. It uses advanced thermochromic pigments to change colors, however, realme did inform us that the life span of this color-changing back is fairly limited. And it will really only last about a year or so. This depends on the environment that you’re using it in, of course.

The realme 14 Pro Plus is the only mid-range smartphone with a 1/2″ Sony IMX882 Sensor with 120X SuperZoom. This is combined with a 50-megapixel Sony IMX896 OIS primary camera, giving you “DSLR-level” clarity, according to realme. I’ve been using this phone off and on for the past couple of months. I’m not sure I’d agree with the “DSLR-level” claim here, but the camera is quite good. Here’s a YouTube Short with some camera samples I took last December.

The realme 14 Pro sports the MediaTek Dimensity 7300. The realme 14 Pro Plus, on the other hand, has the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 inside. Both of them sport a 6,000mAh Titan graphite battery, which should keep it going all day long and then some. In our experience, it has stellar battery life, even for a “mid-range” phone. realme has also equipped both models with IP66, IP68, and IP69 ratings for dust and water resistance. Something that even the Samsung Galaxy S25 series cannot claim.

realme will be announcing availability and color options for specific regions in the near future. So far, we know that the realme 14 Pro is €429 and the realme 14 Pro Plus is €529.
