Rumor: Apple developing 90Hz display tech for iPad Air, Studio Display, and iMac – 9to5Mac

A new rumor today suggests Apple is developing a 90Hz display that could be destined for the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display.

The rumor comes from an anonymous source who reached out to the Upgrade podcast hosted by Myke Hurley and Jason Snell.

Currently, the iPad Air, 24-inch iMac, and Studio Display all feature displays with 60Hz refresh rates. This rumor suggests the 90Hz panel will first appear on the M3 iPad Air and eventually make its way to the 24-inch iMac and Studio Display.

Here’s the full quote sent to Upgrade by the anonymous source:

“I have news on screen improvements for the next generation of the M3 iPad Air. Apple is working on a higher refresh rate LCD display with a new liquid motion panel fixed at around 90Hz. They’re also working on expanding it to other models or products like a 24-inch iMac and a next-gen studio display.”

Analyst Ross Young previously reported that the entire iPhone 17 lineup will feature ProMotion displays with support for 120Hz refresh rates. This, however, is the first we’ve heard about Apple’s alleged work on 90Hz display technology for its other products.

According to Bloomberg, the next-generation iPad Air is expected to debut in early 2025. There haven’t been any concrete rumors about when to expect a next-generation Studio Display. The 24-inch iMac was just updated last week, so its next upgrade is likely set for late 2025 at the earliest.
