According to a recent rumor, Samsung is expected to introduce a bunch of new products in January 2025. The Galaxy S25 series is a pretty obvious candidate, but the rumor also suggests that the Galaxy Ring 2 could be part of the announcement, along with a pair of smart glasses. A recently discovered patent reveals the potential design of the Samsung smart glasses, along with interesting features such as speakers protected by electromagnetic interference.
A familiar look
This patent was discovered by the folks over at 91mobiles. It shows what appears to be a pair of regular-looking glasses, except that it comes with a bunch of tech shoved inside it. If this looks familiar, it is because it’s hard not to draw comparisons to another pair of smart glasses on the market.
Meta introduced its own smart glasses back in 2023. The company created it in collaboration with Ray-Ban. While the concept of smart glasses isn’t new, Meta’s efforts made these hi-tech glasses look more casual and less nerdy.
Samsung’s take on smart glasses doesn’t appear to be too different from what’s available in the market. It houses a bunch of sensors that can detect touch and pressure so users can interact with it without taking it off. It also comes with a built-in set of speakers. The speakers are the more interesting bit of this patent.
According to the patent, Samsung has come up with a way of protecting the speakers of the smart glasses from electromagnetic interference. This occurs when a power line and speakers are close to each other. The magnetic field generated by the powerline creates noise when that happens.
Samsung’s patent suggests that the company has figured out a way to overcome that issue. Reducing unwanted noise is important for a pair of smart glasses, especially for listening to music and making calls, even though it might seem trivial.
Not Samsung’s first rodeo
While this patent hints at a potentially new form factor, it would not be Samsung’s first attempt at a headset. Some of you might recall that the company dipped its toes in the scene with the Samsung Gear VR headset.
More recently, the company teased a new headset codenamed “Moohan” (which means “infinity”, in Korean). For those unfamiliar, Moohan is a mixed-reality headset that runs on Google’s Android XR platform. Some believe that this could be Samsung’s answer to Apple’s (very expensive) Vision Pro headset.
It’s interesting to see Samsung explore a variety of headset designs. Both the Gear VR and Moohan seem designed for indoor use, such as at home or the office. In contrast, this patent could allow users to wear the device outdoors. Google attempted something similar with Google Glass back in the day, but the public didn’t react very well to it.
Reports claimed that establishments banned the headset over concerns that users were being recorded without permission.
