Samsung sets timid sales goal for its first tri-fold phone

Samsung plans to bet more on innovation in the coming years. The company had disappointing financial results in 2024, and standing out in the tech industry with attractive developments is part of its strategy to try to turn the situation around. In line with that, the firm has been working on a tri-fold/dual-folding device that could arrive this year. However, Samsung has not set a huge sales goal for its tri-fold phone.

Foldable phones are an important part of Samsung’s current plan, but 2025 will not be the best year for them. Experts project that this year will bring a new sales drop in the segment, with the recovery starting in 2026. The South Korean giant’s sales projections seem to take this into account.

Samsung does not have a high sales goal for its tri-fold phone

According to the South Korean outlet The Elec, Samsung set a sales goal for its first tri-fold of about 200,000 units. These aren’t huge sales projections, but they are just normal due to some factors. First, there’s the drop in sales of foldable devices projected by analysts for this year. Also, it will probably have a rather high price. The Galaxy Z Fold phones are already expensive, but the tri-fold smartphone will be even more so.

It looks like the most important thing for Samsung is to be one of the first companies to sell a device like this in the consumer market. The South Korean giant can no longer boast of being the first to do so. Huawei got ahead of it with the announcement of the Mate XT. However, Samsung’s alternative will have a different form factor that will give it a distinctive touch. While the Huawei Mate XT folds in a zig-zag pattern, Samsung’s will fold inwards on both sides. This will give it better durability since the foldable screen will not be exposed. This approach will require the company to implement an external panel to use the device when folded.

The company does not expect to reach 10 million foldable devices sold in 2025

The report also reveals details about Samsung’s production plans for other foldables in 2025. The company is expected to manufacture 3 million Galaxy Z Flip 7 models, 0.9 million Galaxy Z Flip FE models, and 2 million Galaxy Z Fold 7 models. In total, Samsung does not expect to reach 10 million units of foldable phones sold this year.
