CES 2025 is fast approaching, and big tech brands are already teasing the products they will showcase during the conference. Samsung Display was a pioneer in the foldable display segment. The company has also been working on rollable or slidable display technology for a while now. Now, Samsung has revealed that it will bring its latest advancements in foldable and slidable displays to the upcoming CES.
The world’s first 18.1-inch foldable panel for IT devices
Samsung is proud to announce the world’s first 18.1-inch foldable panel for computing devices. The technology seems ideal for developing a foldable laptop. When folded, there’s a 13.1-inch touchscreen and a wide bottom section for a virtual keyboard. You can also use the whole screen by connecting a keyboard. The company had already shown a similar technology in 2022, but the screen was 17.3 inches.
Samsung to showcase multiple slidable display form factors at CES 2025
The most interesting part of Samsung’s CES conference aims to be the one related to its slidable displays. The South Korean giant has three form factors ready based on this technology. There’s the Slidable Flex Duet, with a base size of 8.1 inches that can be extended up to 12.4 inches. There’s also the Slidable Flex Solo that starts at 13 inches and grows up to 17.3 inches. Both models are designed to “unroll” horizontally.
On the other hand, the Slidable Flex Vertical, as its name suggests, is aimed at devices that you usually use vertically—mainly smartphones. This display has a fairly compact base size of 5.1 inches. However, it can grow up to 6.7 inches. This technology may be the answer to those users who prefer small and compact phones while also enabling a more “standard” screen size when unrolled.
New QD-OLED TV display tech with 4,000 nits of brightness
Last but not least, Samsung will show off its “over 4,000 nits” bright 2025 QD-OLED TV technology. These 77-inch screens were made with the goal of being as immersive as possible. There are no technical details about the panel yet, but the company claims that the high color purity of its QD-OLED tech “minimizes color blending with surrounding hues, allowing it to more accurately display natural colors that traditional displays struggle to reproduce.”
Samsung achieved the astonishing peak brightness of 4,000 nits thanks to the implementation of new organic materials and panel driving technology. The firm claims that it is the brightest OLED TV display in the industry. It is up to 30% brighter than previous models from Samsung Display itself. The QD-OLED TV tech also features “the highest pixel density among currently available self-emissive monitors,” the company claims.
New OLED-based technologies for displays in vehicles
Samsung also wants to push the advancement of smart displays for cars. The firm seeks to lead the transition from LCD technology currently present in most vehicles to OLED. The change will not only be for aesthetics but also for functionality and flexibility. Samsung has integrated the Under Panel Camera (UPC) for the first time in displays for vehicles. This will enable better driver monitoring systems that will not affect aesthetics and will improve recognition capabilities thanks to the sensor’s relocation.
Samsung’s OLED-based HUD Real Black will also make it easy to see information at a glance while driving. This section will be located at the bottom of the windshield, replacing the dashboard, which in turn will offer greater flexibility to the vehicle designer. The extra information that was on the dashboard will now be on an 18.1-inch CID that blends to fit the car’s design.
