Samsung's 9100 Pro SSD delivers a huge bump to read and write speeds

Samsung has just launched its latest NVMe SSD geared toward gaming with the 9100 Pro, and it promises a HUGE boost to performance thanks to a significant uptick in the sequential read and write speeds. Like the 990 Pro and the 980 Pro before it, the 9100 Pro is Samsung’s top-of-the-line NVMe SSD for consumers who love playing games.

It comes in two variations. One without a heatsink, and one with a heatsink. Which one you would want really all depends on what you plan to use it in. If you’re using it inside of a desktop gaming PC, then you may not even need a heatsink. However, if you’re plan was to use it inside of a PS5, you would definitely want the heatsink model.

While it’s not expressly required, Sony does recommend you use a heatsink with expandable storage. When it comes to speeds, the 9100 is blazing fast. It offers sequential read speeds of up to 14,800 MB/s and sequential write speeds of up to 13,400 MB/s. That’s a 49% bump over the Samsung 990 Pro. So if speed is your concern, this will allow you to throw that concern right out the window. For comparison, the 990 Pro sequential read and write speeds are up to 7,450MB/s and 6,900 MB/s respectively.

Those are still very fast, but it’s clear Samsung is trying to push the envelope here with the 9100 Pro.

Availability for the Samsung 9100 Pro starts in March

While Samsung has technically launched the 9100 Pro SSD today, actual availability won’t start until March. Samsung doesn’t mention a specific date, but it does mention pricing. Starting next month, you’ll be able to pick up the 9100 Pro with or without a heatsink in a few different storage capacities. This includes 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models. Prices start at $199.99 for the 1TB without a heatsink.

So keep in mind that going for the 4TB big boy with a heatsink is going to be costly, as it will retail for $569.99. These will be available through Samsung directly and other retailers. That means it’s likely we’ll see these on Amazon and Best Buy as well.

This is Samsung’s first in the lineup to come in an 8TB capacity

Samsung is stepping things up with the amount of storage it’s offering to gamers. It’s finally going to be offering an 8TB NVMe SSD in its Pro gaming lineup. However, it won’t be launching until later this year. Well after the other capacities are available. Samsung confirms it’ll be coming in the second half of 2025. It will also be coming in a variant with and without a heatsink.

Given the price of the 4TB model with a heatsink, expect the 8TB version to cost considerably more money. Samsung hasn’t confirmed a price, but don’t be surprised if it’s upwards of $999.99. We’re just speculating, of course, but the prices of other 8TB NVMe SSDs are comparative. The 8TB WD_Black SN850P with a heatsink launched at $999.99. Other models, like the Sabrent Rocket 4 Plus were available for around the same price.

SSD costs haven’t exactly come down a lot since then. So that, and the fact that the 9100 Pro is PCIe Gen 5.0, makes a $999.99 price pretty likely. However, one without a heatsink should be a bit less. One thing is for sure, you’d likely never need any more storage capacity.
