Samsung's new gaming monitor has a 40-inch 5K display

Samsung has just announced its latest gaming monitor offering at CES this evening called the Odyssey G7, and like its other recently announced monitors, it comes with at least one trait that the company claims is an “industry first” for the gaming monitor space. This will be Samsung’s third gaming monitor announced for CES. With the others having been announced on January 3. Unlike the Odyssey G6 and Odyssey G8, however, the Odyssey G7 has a noticeably bigger display size.

So Samsung is definitely targeting the gamer crowd who prefers bigger screens to incredibly fast refresh rates. That being said, the refresh rate on the Odyssey G7 is still respectable. At 180Hz, it’s unlikely that anyone is going to be complaining. In addition to the big screen size and the more than capable refresh rate, the Odyssey G7 also comes with a 5K (5120 x 2160) resolution panel.

Samsung says this is the industry’s first 40-inch gaming monitor with this resolution. So if you value bigger displays and as clear a picture as you can get, this might be the monitor for you.

The Samsung Odyssey G7 gaming monitor provides a “unique combination”

Samsung’s newest version of the Odyssey G7 appears with pretty standard specs that the industry has come to know of the company’s most recent gaming monitors from 2024. A 1ms response time? Check. A nearly bezel-less display on three of its four sides? Check.

It also has VESA DisplayHDR 600 support and it’s HDR10+ certified. What makes this monitor special is the unique combination of its size and 5K resolution. Since there aren’t any options out there yet with both of these specifications together in a gaming monitor package.

It’s also important to note that this isn’t the first 40-inch monitor with 5K resolution in general. Dell offers one that’s 5K and has a 40-inch display size. However, it isn’t a gaming monitor, so Samsung’s claim is more or less true here. The monitor also has several IO ports including one for ethernet, and it uses a nice flat stand that takes up less desk surface area. There’s even a neat RGB light ring on the back like many of Samsung’s other gaming monitors.

Samsung has no pricing or availability details to share at this time

If this monitor suits what you’re looking for, then it’s something you’ll want to keep an eye on. Specifically with regard to the cost, and the launch date. At this time, Samsung hasn’t confirmed pricing or availability details. That might not matter too much though, as you can make some inferences based on Samsung’s previous Odyssey G7 model.

The Odyssey Neo G7 43-inch monitor was $999.99 when it launched and it was available in the US and several other regions. Since this is 5K though, even at a slightly smaller size, the new Odyssey G7 will likely cost more.
