Samsung's XR headset display may be better than Vision Pro's

Samsung officially showed off its XR headset for the first time in late 2024 after much speculation and leaks. The company teased the Android XR-powered product again during the launch of the Galaxy S25 series and at the latest MWC 2025 in Barcelona. The device is expected to hit the market sometime in H2 2025. Meanwhile, a report claims that Samsung’s XR headset display will be sharper than the Apple Vision Pro.

There are no details yet on the price range that Samsung’s XR headset will occupy. While it may not be as affordable as a Meta Quest, it is also unlikely to be as expensive as the Apple Vision Pro. Perhaps the company will adopt a price segment similar to the HTC Vive headsets, although this is just speculation at the moment. That said, it’s possible that Samsung’s device will outperform the Apple Vision Pro in one key area.

Samsung reportedly to use Sony’s display tech to outperform Apple Vision Pro image quality

Korean outlet TheElec reports that Samsung will implement Sony’s 1.3-inch 4K OLEDoS (OLED on Silicon) displays in its Android XR headset. This would translate to a high pixel density of 3,800 ppi. In comparison, the pixel density of the Apple Vision Pro’s displays is 3,391 ppi. In other words, Samsung’s device could offer a 12% sharper image.

It’s interesting that Samsung is turning to a third-party supplier like Sony for OLEDoS displays. Last year, the Korean giant bought eMagin, a company dedicated to making OLEDoS and Micro OLED panels. However, it seems that eMagin’s product is still behind Sony’s in terms of pixel density. The company’s displays top out at 3,500 ppi, which still surpasses Apple’s headset. Perhaps Samsung wants to make the difference in image quality even more striking.

That said, Samsung’s potential use of Sony’s OLEDoS displays raises some questions about the price of its XR headset. Sony introduced its OLEDoS panels in 2023 with a price tag of KRW 1.45 million (about $1,995). A couple of years later, the technology should be more affordable but still in an expensive segment. So, it’s hard to imagine a price tag below $1,000 (or even $2,000) for the XR headset. Hopefully, news about the product’s price will emerge soon.

According to reports, Samsung expects to sell about 100,000 units of its XR headset. Meanwhile, Apple is working on a more affordable version of the Vision Pro after the commercial failure of the current model. Samsung’s product could potentially target the same price segment as the cheaper Vision Pro.
