Well, the cat’s out of the bag! We finally got our first look at Samsung’s upcoming XR headset, and we’re looking forward to what the company will offer. While we don’t know too much about what it will bring, a new report says that Samsung’s XR headset will come with motion controller support.
In case you don’t know, Google revealed the next frontier in XR (extended reality) technology. It announced Android XR, which is a platform that XR headset makers can load onto their devices. It’s basically like what Android is to smartphones. We don’t know too much about the operating system, but we know that it will use several technologies that Google’s developed over the years including AI.
Among the news, we finally got our first look at what Samsung has been working on. We’ve followed news that the company began working on its own XR headset to compete with the ill-fated Apple Vision Pro. Codenamed “Project Moohan”, this headset will be the first device to run Android XR.
Samsung’s XR headset will have motion controllers
The Apple Vision Pro, for all its utility, lacks something rather crucial at this point in time. The only way to manipulate the content in front of you is to use hand gestures. Sure, it’s neat, but it makes the device useless for the thousands of VR and XR apps that use controllers.
While Apple awaits PSVR2 controller compatibility, a report states that Samsung’s XR headset will come with motion controller support right out of the box. We don’t know if Samsung will include a set of controllers in the box. While it’d be rather silly for the company to charge you separately for controllers, this is one of the brands that don’t include chargers with their phones. So, we’ll need to keep our fingers crossed.
You’ll use hand gestures with Samsung’s XR headset, but having controller support just adds so much utility. One reason that people turned their noses up at the Apple Vision Pro is the lack of gaming support. Gaming isn’t a priority for Apple, but it is for its users, and many VR games need controllers to function. So, Samsung is making a good choice here.
PC streaming
Along with controller support, the report states that Samsung’s headset will be able to stream content from your PC. If so, then this will increase this device’s utility, as you won’t be tied to a mobile platform. In fact, this isn’t just a Samsung thing, as it’ll be a native Android XR feature. At this point, we don’t know too many details about how PC streaming will work. In any case, it’ll be great to see.
