TAYLORS, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – South Carolina transportaiton officials took a tour of road and bridge damage in the Upstate left by Helene.

After Helene, more than 900 roads and bridges were closed in South Carolina.

The South Carolina Department of Transportation opened 859 of them using federal emergency funds for the initial repairs. One major repair project SCDOT is currently working on is US 276 in Caesar’s Head.

Secretary of Transportation Juston Powell said emergency repair plans are underway to fix the remaining 41 roads and bridges; 12 of the bridges will need to be replaced.

Powell said from a damage perspective, it will cost around $50 million to fix the remaining roads and bridges. He also said debris pickup will cost hundreds of millions of dollars, but the state will get reimbursed through federal funding.

Officials said it will take 12 to 24 months before all of the remaining roads and bridges are repaired and reopened.
