Scott Honeycutt, ASD’s transportation director and chief safety officer – Conejos County Citizen

By ADAMS STATE UNIVERSITY

ALAMOSA – Scott Honeycutt started at the Alamosa School District in 2003 driving buses. Now he makes sure that every student gets to school safely and on time, and that while they’re at school they are safe there, too. Honeycutt sits so he always faces the door. You could say his job is to expect surprises.

When he was handed the Educator Highlight Award recently, he was caught by pleasant surprise. “I have no idea what’s going on,” he said and smiled. He was given the award right as the school district’s regular cabinet meeting was about to begin.

“God is great,” he said. “I’d never seen this coming. I’m kinda at a loss for words, to be honest with you.”

Honeycutt has served as the transportation director and chief safety officer for the school district for three and a half years now. Every morning, he makes his rounds.

As he shook ASU School of Education Director Curtis Garcia’s hand he said, “You don’t know what that means. Thank you all. I do appreciate it.”

Honeycutt is the latest educator to receive the honor from the Adams State School of Education, which focuses on highlighting each month the excellent work happening in the San Luis Valley’s educational system. Here is a full list of past recipients.

His message for the students going into the new year is, “Keep your head up, keep moving forward, and we’ll get there.”
