The city of Sheffield Lake and Sheffield Village have announced their selection as recipients of the Ohio Department of Transportation’s (ODOT) Active Transportation Planning Assistance Grant, according to a news release.
Over the next 12 months, this initiative will support the development of a comprehensive Active Transportation Plan aimed at improving safety, connectivity and accessibility for biking and walking in the community, the release said.
Throughout this process, ODOT will provide consultant assistance to help Sheffield Lake and Sheffield Village create a standalone Active Transportation Plan, according to the release.
This effort will include an evaluation of existing conditions, recommendations for infrastructure projects and programs, a prioritized list of improvements and a plan for implementation, monitoring and reporting, the release said.
Stakeholder and public engagement will play a central role, ensuring the plan reflects local priorities, according to the release.
“We are thrilled to receive this grant, which will allow us to prioritize active transportation infrastructure and improve safety and connectivity for our residents,” said Sheffield Lake Mayor Rocky Radeff in the release. “This plan will be a cornerstone of our efforts to enhance quality of life in Sheffield Lake.”
Sheffield Village Mayor Bob Markovich also was happy to share the news of the ODOT Active Transportation Plan.
“This partnership with ODOT, Sheffield Lake and our valued community stakeholders, reflects our shared commitment to creating safe and accessible transportation options for everyone,” Markovich said in the release. “The Active Transportation Plan will lay the foundation for a healthier, more connected future.”
This milestone would not have been possible without the invaluable support of the partners involved, including the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake City Schools, Lorain County Public Health and others, according to the release.
Their expertise and advocacy were instrumental in securing this opportunity and ensuring the Active Transportation Plan addresses the unique needs of the Sheffield Lake and Sheffield Village communities, the release said.
The Active Transportation Plan will focus on developing walking and biking networks that connect neighborhoods, schools, parks and the Lake Erie waterfront, improving accessibility and safety for residents and visitors, according to the release.
Public input will be central to the process, with opportunities for engagement through meetings, surveys and outreach efforts, the release said.
