According to a report from The Verge, the new program will cover content posted to Stories as well as Spotlight. Previously these two formats had separate monetization programs but now they will be under one system.
Creators can earn revenue from Ads in eligible stories and spotlight post
The new monetization program will allow creators to earn from ads displayed in eligible Snapchat Stories and Spotlight posts. Now, Snapchat is testing this new program with a small group of users, and will be rolled out widely starting February 1, 2025.
Creators who want to get an invitation to the program must meet certain eligibility requirements such as having at least 50,000 followers and meeting certain views or watch time benchmarks. Creators will need either 10 million snap views, 1 million Spotlight views, or 12,000 hours of watch time in the last 28 days. On top of that, creators must post at least 25 times per month to Saved Stories or Spotlight and be active on the platform (posting to Spotlight or public Stories) for at least 10 of the last 28 days.
“With Spotlight viewership up 25% year-over-year, there is a unique and growing opportunity for creators to monetize this format in the same way they do with Stories.” says Snapchat in a blog post.
Snapchat follows the trend of simplified monetization like TikTok and YouTube
Snapchat’s move is similar to what other social media platforms are doing. TikTok recently changed its monetization system to focus on longer videos. YouTube also launched a revenue-sharing model for its Shorts where creators can earn from ads.
Snapchat is probably introducing a new monetization program to make it easier for its creators. The unified program will simplify the earnings process for creators who post to both Stories and Spotlight. Snapchat’s previous system had separate earning structures for Stories and Spotlight.
Speaking of Snapchat’s Rewards program, it rewards creators for their contributions to the platform. By meeting specific criteria, such as having a significant number of subscribers and posting consistently, creators can earn revenue from ads shown between their Snaps in Public Stories.
