Just when you think that you’ve seen it all, someone comes in and hits you with news like this. A talented developer just posted a Reddit post showing something that you won’t really believe. They were able to get games like God of War and GTA: Vice City to run on a Galaxy Watch 5.
This should and shouldn’t really shock you. It’s become a tradition among tech nerds to run software on hardware not designed for it. We see stories like this all the time. A few examples are the people who loaded Windows 11 onto a Pixel 6, ported Wordle to a Game Boy, and we can’t forget the person who got DOOM to run on a home pregnancy test. It’s interesting to see, as it shows that the devices we use are much more powerful than we think.
Someone ported some games onto a Galaxy Watch 5
The Redditor is u/ZenonDesingk, and they uploaded a post showing snapshots of the watch running the games. We see five pictures showing the watch running Town Hall 8, GTA: Vice City, God of War: Chains of Olympus (PSP version), Need For Speed: Most Wanted, Mortal Kombat, Clash Royale, and Forza Horizon 4. They were able to do this through several methods.
Firstly, by using Bugjaegey, an Android ADB, they were able to port APK files over to their smartwatch. One of the APK files was a PSP emulator. Of course, it took a little bit of tinkering to get the games to work, but they were able to pull it off.
Next up, ZenonDesingK was able to load Steam Link onto the smartwatch. This is how they were able to get games like Forza Horizon to run; they streamed the gameplay. Emulating PSP games is one thing, but there’s no way that the Galaxy Watch 5 could run a modern AAA PC game natively.
The only bummer is that the user didn’t provide any video of the apps running on the watch. In any case, it’s still interesting to see people experimenting and running games on non-native hardware.
