Sonos may be developing a streaming box to compete with Apple TV

Multiple reports in the past few months have indicated that the audio pioneer Sonos is working on a streaming box. It will be the first foray into this category. It will be competing against the likes of the Apple TV and Roku streaming devices in the same space. Now, a new report by The Verge suggests that the product is under development with the codename “Pinewood”. The Verge has also shared some details regarding the features of Sonos’ first device in the streaming category.

The Sonos streaming box is shaping up to be a content-rich device

As per the report, the upcoming product from Sonos will be able to offer content from all popular OTT platforms. Some of the big names include Disney+, HBO Max, and Netflix. It could offer a unified experience by curating content from popular streaming platforms. Sonos is reportedly building its Android-based operating system for the upcoming “Pinewood” streaming device.

The company is working with The Trade Desk, a digital advertising platform, to build the operating system. So, there’s a possibility that some of the streaming options from Sonos will include advertisements. However, it is mere speculation at the moment.

Functionalities of a central hub for all Sonos devices

Furthermore, the report suggests that the upcoming Sonos device will function as a central hub for all other products from the company. It will allow users to configure a surround sound system by connecting multiple Sonos speakers, sound bars, and other audio devices. For example, instead of relying heavily on a soundbar, the users can create dedicated front left, and right channels with two Era 300s or similar audio products.

Also, experts say that the streaming box supports gigabit ethernet and Wi-Fi 7 connectivity options. In addition, the device will reportedly serve as an HDMI switch and will offer several HDMI ports with passthrough functionality. These will allow users to connect multiple external products like gaming consoles or 4K Blu-ray players. Design-wise, it will feature a modest build in the form of a flattened black square. It will have a thickness slightly more than “a deck of cards”, adds the report.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman was the first one to report about the “Pinewood” Sonos device in 2023. Gurman suggested that Sonos could price the streaming box between $150 and $200. Some other reports indicate that it may be a more costly device, with a price estimated to be between $200 and $400. Unfortunately, Sonos hasn’t yet officially confirmed the existence of such a device.
