Sony reveals movies based on Helldivers II and Horizon Zero Dawn

Sony has been pretty busy at CES this year with all kinds of announcements for new consumer electronics, but that hasn’t stopped it from squeezing in some tiny tidbits related to its PlayStation IP, which includes movies based on Helldivers II and Horizon Zero Dawn.

Both games are from some of Sony’s most popular franchises of late. Helldivers II is a co-op third-person and first-person shooter that puts you in the role of a human soldier fighting against alien threats. It’s basically a big homage to Starship Troopers. Horizon Zero Dawn, meanwhile, is a third-person action RPG where you play as the main character Aloy, a hunter in a world that’s been overrun by machines. Both are exceedingly fun to play and seem like they could fit well within a film setting.

That being said, we’ll have to wait and see how things pan out as games have had a rocky history of adaptions. Though, more recently shows like Fallout and The Last of Us have shown that they can be pretty amazing if done right.

With regard to Helldivers II, its similarities with Starship Troopers give it a good shot at winning over viewers. Starship Troopers wasn’t exactly a box office smash hit but it was semi-successful and it has a huge cult following of fans. With Helldivers II being similar in theme, it could easily be a popular Summer blockbuster. Horizon Zero Dawn has equally good potential with how well-loved that game has been. But it’s important not to get ahead of ourselves, as Sony merely just announced its plans for these films.

The Helldivers II movie is being worked on by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions

According to Sony both of these movies are currently in the early stages of development. That means fans of either franchise shouldn’t expect the movies to be coming out anytime soon. Helldivers II is reportedly being developed by Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions, the multimedia arm Sony set up to help studios work on adaptions of the PlayStation IP. The Horizon Zero Dawn movie is being worked on by Columbia Pictures.

There isn’t really any detail about the theme or premise of the Helldivers II movie, but Sony has shared one small piece of information about the Horizon Zero Dawn project. It’ll be based on the first game and focus on Aloy’s origin story. Other than that, details are scarce.

Sony is also working on a Ghost of Tsushima anime with Crunchyroll

Sony isn’t done with turning some of its most popular PlayStation games into other forms of media. In partnership with Crunchyroll and Aniplex, Sony has announced an anime based on Ghost of Tsushima: Legends. Legends is the multiplayer mode that Sucker Punch Productions released as DLC for Ghost of Tsushima about three months after the game’s launch. It allowed you to party up with up to three other people and take on wave-based combat missions set in the Ghost of Tsushima world.

It was actually a really good part of the game and found success with a majority of Ghost’s player base. Especially since it was completely free content. The anime will utilize Sony Music for the soundtrack and animation will be done by KAMIKAZE DOUGA, with Gen Urobuchi handling story composition. Neither Sony nor Crunchyroll have mentioned anything about the anime’s storyline, but there’s plenty of time to figure that out since it won’t be released until 2027.
