Sony’s XYN VR headset will make it easier to create content for spatial computing

This year at CES 2025, we’re definitely seeing a lot more smart glasses and headsets being launched. It’s safe to say that many of these companies believe that the future of tech lies in spatial computing. So much so that Sony is getting in on the action by showing off its XYN prototype VR headset and platform.

Sony’s XYN headset

At CES, Sony showed off a prototype of the XYN VR headset. This is a headset that the company says will help in the creation of spatial content. It comes equipped with 4K OLED microdisplays with support for video see-through. According to Sony, the headset is compatible with various 3D production software. This includes pre-visualization and 3D character modeling.

Basically, users will be able to use the headset to take real-world objects and recreate them in virtual reality. This will be useful when it comes to creating 3D models for games or content for the metaverse, but it could have industrial benefits too. This comes in the form of the concept of digital twins.

This is where real-world objects are recreated in the digital space for testing and refinement purposes. For instance, a company that wants to streamline its manufacturing process can create a digital twin of its current setup. From there, it can experiment and try out new things without actually disrupting its current operations. Using a headset like the Sony XYN can help make that happen.

The rise of mixed reality

While VR headsets have been around for a while, there seems to be a growing interest in mixed-reality headsets. We’re seeing product launches from companies like Apple with its Vision Pro headset. Samsung also recently teased its own mixed-reality headset. Let’s not forget that at CES 2025, there have been a ton of smart glasses and headsets.

Mixed reality is understandably more popular than virtual reality. This is because it blends both the real world and the virtual world together for more practicality. For instance, a headset like the Vision Pro allows users to overlay browsers and apps while still maintaining awareness of their surroundings.

It basically enhances your reality. Virtual reality, on the other hand, completely locks you away in a virtual world. In terms of immersiveness, VR is unbeatable, but not everyone necessarily wants that. Hopefully, with the launch of the Sony Xyn headset, we can look forward to seeing more spatial computing content in the future.
