The 158mph car, made in 1986, is based on the classic Escort model and has the same engine — but at the back.

It was built for the West German market, so is left-hand drive, and cost £49,995 new — that’s £146,375 in today’s money.

The car, which has done just 1,404 miles, was returned to the UK in 2015 and has since had two owners.

The RS200 S was a modified version of the RS200 and was fitted with several upgrades including electric windows, improved airflow and ducting, and air intakes.

They are often called ‘ears’ – above the doors at the back of the roof as per the competition cars and an increase in power from 250bhp to 350bhp.

The RS200 S was blisteringly fast and capable of going from 0 to 60mph in just 3.8 seconds.

Believed to have been the 16th RS200 S, the left-hand drive example had done just over 1,404 miles.

Seller Iconic Auctioneers in Coventry said: “It would occupy pride of place in any exclusive collection of RS Fords.

“Should its next owner choose to use the car on the road, they would enjoy a seriously quick, totally competent, lightweight sports car.”
